A More Public Sharing: Random, spontaneous Facebook remark concerning the left/right debate within the Jewish community.

(Editor’s note: Seems to me that most of the left/right arguments are absurd and are beneath the understanding of 7th Grade Social Studies. This may confirm the maxim that public political messaging is usually conducted at a 6th grade level. My guess, strictly from observing our President and remembering the playground trash-talk contests of the Chicago Public Schools I attended…we are, collectively, more at 3rd or 4th grade. I sometimes have the tendency to bring things to a street level. That’s part of who I am and I don’t think that will completely go away, but I hope to sometimes bring the discussion up to the college undergraduate level and help us all to a better social and political place.)
There are pro-Israel voices on the hard left and on the hard right. Just as there are anti-Israel voices all over the spectrum. I am going to repeat a point I made early and often back in our old MySpace Jews group: because Jews make up one of the strongest constituencies within the Democratic party, elements of the GOP deliberately sought to widen the wedge between the Anti-Israel left and Pro-Israel Jewish Democrats (I am talking about specific parts of specific factions, not the entire party, not the conservative movement, not Christianity as a whole—definitely part of the Trump coalition that added to the GOP base and provided a margin of victory).

This messaging war—which erupted in the midst of traditional bi-partisan support for Israel—has caused deeper and more bitter divisions within the Jewish communitiy, it ignores the fact that a good portion of these hard left anti-Israel are outside the Democratic party precisely because it is the party of Pro Israel Jews. It falsely accuses passionate supporters of Israel of being anti-Israel for advocating a two state solution and sometimes makes that false charge against those that criticize Israel, sometimes for merely understanding that Palestinians, enemies or not, are human beings. In short, we are falsely accused for acting out some aspect of ethical Judasim that somehow crosses some ever-shifting increasingly fascist party line. This is the same line that has no problem with loshon hara against the last President Democrats elected here and apparently, in some cases, has a very soft, if not supportive view of an elected Israeli Prime Minister being murdered.

Most recently, some of my fellow Jews here, the same ones that have carried false witness against me and my colleagues, have been off chirping that Anti-Fascists are the real Fascists. Welcome to Orwell’s nightmare. Thank you ,Fascists and Crypto-Fascists. Cynical and battle-hardened as I am, to think that I’d live to see the day I’d be falsely accused of being a terrorist or a fascist precisely because I identify as Anti-Fascist, or that another Jew would have the chutzpa, to apologize for or sympathize with active Nazis, or join them in criticizing the rest of us.

The last of the survivors and those that won the war against the Nazis are now passing from this earth. It is a new golden era for holocaust deniers. Or should I call it an Orange era? And now we hear the Anti-Fascists are the real fascists. Reductio Ad Absurdum. Let us pray. Shalom.

The Heartland Remembers Elvis

25 some odd years ago, this poem was rejected for publication by Grassroots, the literary magazine of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I was informed it was “too flippant” which I consider a rather flippant rejection. This is far superior to the first poem I ever wrote. That first one was published by Grassroots, and good thing, too, because it convinced me I must be a poet. I was fortunate when rejected to be secure in my greatness, unaffected by rejection though I still feel compelled to bring it up all these years later. Perhaps I am just insecure and narcissistic enough to become President of the United States someday and I hope my work as an internet troll is sufficient to accomplish that, because it will be so great. Believe me. As another note, I was not nearly as fat when I wrote this as I am now, though as a starving young poet I was not nearly flacid enough to be Presidential. One last note, my wife says I look good in orange. Jackson County thought the same thing after I refused to pay a speeding ticket. But that’s another story.

The Heartland Remembers Elvis

Who could bounce the sweet, fat ball of success better than

Elvis?

When I plunge into a soft chair, feel my gut sag into

my lap,

E   is for everything a King can get away with.

L   is to love that extra bacon grease in the gravy

on the biscuits of life.

V   is for Vegas, and beating the odds,

like when Cool Hand Luke eats fifty hard-boiled eggs

and doesn’t puke…

he’s the biggest winner in prison doing lonely, hard time.

I     is for me, sometimes acting like E.

S    is the hiss of final music, your last breath coming out

your mouth like steam, when you kiss the Devil’s ass.
